We travelled thousands of kilometres together, but Watson was extremely particular about where he slept. A strange motel floor was never going to do it. What worked was one bed that came everywhere — the same smell, the same shape, the same soft edge to lean against — so that wherever we stopped, a small piece of home was already unrolled and waiting for him.
